Jeffrey A Kappen

  1. Tell us about your experience in the Middle East

I am a professor of management and international business at Drake University in the United States. I am also a partner at Bâton Global, a boutique consulting firm focused on helping organizations worldwide with strategic and organizational challenges. Over the past 15 years, I have worked with public and private clients in projects in agriculture, economic development, and education across the Middle East. My most recent stay in the region was spent at Hamad Bin Khalifa University in Doha last year.

  1. How would you describe the culture of your business?

Our culture reflects a dedication to delivering value – both economic and social – to the clients we serve. We always have an eye on the impact our projects have on all stakeholders as we evaluate the projects we accept and the outcomes of our work. Reflecting our home region in America, we place importance on long-term relationships, trusting partnerships, and manage our team as a meritocracy.

  1. What are the biggest challenges you see for regional businesses to adapt to the global environment in the short term?

The fall in commodity prices has hit many emerging markets. During this time, companies will need to focus on strategic diversification to adjust to the new macro environment. Once a plan is set, implementing the internal organizational development process – which is sometimes even more challenging for companies than choosing how to diversify – must be done in a deliberate and systematic manner to be effective. I have often seen great plans fail because the members of the organization were not given the proper structures and tools to realize its potential.

  1. What are your firm’s biggest challenges in the next 5 years

We are taking an intentional approach to managing the growth of our firm in the face of increasing opportunities in the region. Given our relational approach to working on projects, we want to ensure that the value we deliver remains of consistently high quality as we grow in scale. Additionally, like nearly all of our clients and partners, we are also engaged in the continuous fight to get the best talent.

  1. What is your philosophy?

Bâton Global creates value for our clients by providing conceptually and empirically based solutions to their most important problems. Our core team holds doctorates and graduate degrees in a variety of disciplines, which allows us to leverage cutting-edge academic research with in-depth analysis of clients’ challenges in order to propose novel and individualized solutions.
