You might think you have the killer content, but if your audience is not engaged with you during your delivery then it becomes challenging and your audience’ disengagement might affect the effectiveness of your training.
How would it be if you could master a few techniques that can hijack the audience’ flighty focus and help you engage the audience’ attention towards your presentation.
As we all know the human minds’ listening capability lasts for not more than eight to ten minutes, so it is imperative for a facilitator to emphasis on the audience’ engagement during the training delivery.
Here are a few tips that you can use according to the size of your audience
- Use Interesting Questions Start the introduction with a few interesting questions apart from their basic education and designation of the participants. You may ask questions related to their interest and recent experiences related to your topic. For example, when I give a presentation on Emotional Intelligence I ask them to share about what is one thing that is very unique or special about them, and the frequent happy feelings and frequent sad feelings which they experience. Their response is key to connecting with them and understand their personality to engage them better.
- Use Activities and Games where appropriate: Motion creates emotions that’s why training games and activities are fun and engaging They are involving and interactive.
For example, when I have to talk about the listening and questioning skills. I give them back to back drawing, I make sure that I involve the audience by demonstrating first with one couple and ask for the learnings from the audience.
The responses are key to enlighten the content and concepts of effective listening and questioning skills. This activity can be repeated with the learning so the audience can feel the difference when they implement the steps involved in listening and questioning skills.
This is q most powerful way to keeps the audience invigorated.
Note : Every game or activity needs to be supported with a strong debriefing of the learnings
3. Be a Story Player Stories are like the cement that are very effective to construct the wall of your content. For thousands of years story-telling has been a fundamental communication method. When you say a story make sure that you create those significant pictures in the mind of your audience, this will keep your audience captivated.
Be a story player rather than a story teller
You can do it with your body language, with your power of intonation. Add the juice of your emotions in your words/When I have facilitated seminars about the importance of Communication
I narrate a simple and a true story of a construction site, A major accident would have been avoided if the communication would have been clear.
Relate it to their day to day activates what kind of communication make them feel comfortable and if communication is not clear what would be the consequences listen to their simple stories, they will be more involved and you can get more insights about what are the areas of improvement.
- Use Visual Aids
During a presentation it’s a great concept to introduce relevant training videos. Before, I could introduce the topic, I make the audience watch a small 3 minutes video,/nd then I will discuss their observations from the video.
They come up with everything that adds value to my presentation for example, I often show a video on the power of positive words.
“I am blind. Please help me/” or words like? “Today is a beautiful day and I can’t see. Then connect those words with their work/
Give a few examples of phrases which can be reframed in a more positive way, like you have finished the file, but you are late. Can be reframed to. ” though you were late, I am glad you have completed the file.”
This gets the audience more enthralled and engaged
- Play Some Music
Music proves to be most powerful for after the lunch sessions. Music rejuvenates, the audience and helps them to be involved in the topic of discussion or a play. For example for stress management I make the audience walk with a thought of their stress in their mind till a particular distance. I make them repeat this with a same walk with a very energizing music .it will uplift their mood and make them feel less stressful with their challenges.
You might incorporate music for just a talk of any topic chosen from the audience, this might be fun and engaging for them to be more expressive,Music have the power to even replace a brain surgery, it must be used wisely to capture the audience attention.
- Show Pictures
This could be one of the interesting way to introduce a topic. I show few unique pictures related to the topic and I make sure that everyone shares their opinion. If you have time, encourage them to even write it for 2 minutes and then invite them to read their response. You will be amazed to see how people have different interpretations on the same picture.
I use this below picture that make people realize to use the resources around them and the biggest resources that could add value to your work is to include human elements with empathy and tone of voice .
7.Visual auditory and kinesthetic
These are the 3 fundamentals of NLP. Everyone can be broadly classified as a
Visual: are those who loves to see things like pictures, videos and demonstrations.
Auditory: They love to listen, they can attracted with music, Intonation and charisma in your voice
Kinesthetic: They are the one who wants to feel the things around them, they love activities, role plays and games
What matters to them is the emotions of the situations, inspiration, motivation and moral values drives them.
For the presentation to be more appealing, it is best to include all the 3 elements
You can do it by making them visualize a situation, and then ask them to share responses. Give them smart case studies, divide them into groups.
Ask them winning questions, how will they handle a situation? Encourage them to raise their hands and show the interest in what you have asked. Ask them to come on the stage and support their thoughts.
This is one of the most effective and simple way of engaging the audience. You may choose to write or draw on the flip chart or on the white board. Create some competition and write the score on the board. Make the participants to present their team report on the flip chart.
Ask the participants to write an adjective that describes them and talk about it,
When they write and then talk about it, it becomes more interesting and likeable. The key to engage the audience is to relate to the audience interest in every example and case study . The content development must be related to their work and it must add value to them by engaging them and reflecting on their responses.
The facilitator must be highly encouraging and passionate about sharing their knowledge, the enthusiasm gets transferred and it will reflect in productive results and participants involvement in the training.
