October Spotlight On Erik Koeman

eric-koeman1. Tell us about you, your experience and time in the Middle East.

I arrived in the Middle-East 14 years ago via Riyadh where I took a mandate to head up the retail marketing portfolio for the Nike brand with Al-Hokair. It was quite an eye opener. We set up Nike flagship stores across the Kingdom and Nike’s awareness became at par with Adidas as a result which was a fantastic. I recycled myself into L&D upon arriving in Dubai, and learning has been my passion for the past 10 years.

As a trainer and consultant firstly and with the last 5 years working at Al-Futtaim where I led the creation of the Retail Business College, which was my proudest realization.

2.         How would you describe the culture of your business?
N/A as I am now an independent consultant

3.         What are the biggest challenges in the next 5 years?

Leveraging learning technology while maintaining effectiveness. I recently attended the ATD show in Denver and the big theme was how to reach millennials with L&D and the big consensus was though gamification and micro learning. Learning professionals will need to maximize this objective to remain business relevant

4.         What are the skills and competencies that you would need to train in order to meet the regions talent requirements?

Collaborative leadership is a key area that I think companies do not emphasize enough in this region. Corporate performance will be enhanced when leaders learn the abilities required to work as a true team both in theory and in reality.

5.         What is your Philosophy?
Good leadership starts with empowerment and trust.
John Maxwell said it best: I don’t care what you know until I know how much you care “
